Very well explained, the problem Petrie had though was that the chamber pavement level would not have agreed with the step level and he seemed baffled about it because the surface condition of the sub-pavement actually does agree with the horizontal passage surface from the step north to the ascending passage. This is significant when you consider that the wall courses wrap into the horizontal passage and continue up to the passage step, noting as Petrie states that the courses were less of a concern for the builders of the chamber than the seams/joints between each wall stone. What ever pavement did exist, in its original form, it obviously continued or was maintained into the passage. M&R put the pavement thickness at 1 cubit but the difference between the sub-pavement and the step is 19.8 inches, though hardly a difference that couldn't be accounted for in shaping the pavement.
An interesting feature of the horizontal passage is that the walls have 3 different forms of construction that mirror each other and roughly start and end together, i.e. the chamber courses end at the step, from the step north the walls have single stones with only a vertical seam and then a most unusual symmetrical stacking, from the ascending passage south the symmetrical stacking is made with two courses, each stacked stone 2 cubits long and run this way exactly 40 royal cubits, the length of the stacked stones change at this point on both sides of the passage where if I remember correctly there are 3 sets of varied symmetrical stacks on the western side and only two on the eastern, these stacked stones end unevenly away from the ascending passage into the single stone portion of the passage. Interesting in that the chamber niche is exactly 80 royal cubits south of the ascending passage or double the symmetrical 40 cubit distance of stacking of 2 cubit lengths wall stones of the horizontal passage, odd because the chamber is not part of this measurement symmetry as the Niche is not centered in the chamber. Food for thought...
By the way, how do I post an image in my posts?? is there an application here on the site for it? Or do I just cut and paste? which I cant seem to do??
