There are certainly examples of solstice alignments and festivals that are known to be associated with the rising sun all over the place as you say. At Dendera for example on the day of the festival a statue of Hathor was taken onto the roof in the evening and placed so that she would be united with the rising sun in the morning. Newgrange in Ireland is another example.

I have a whole raft of photos from Egypt - will post more when I get a chance.
