Modern people tend to greatly underestimate the
complexity of the wheel. This can be seen in some
of the responses in that thread. The wheel isn't
some simple round object that allows movement or
propels things along a line. Rollers are simple
devices but wheels are complex; they require an
axle and something to hold the axla in place. They
allow the round thing to stay under the object rat-
ther than to be constantly shuttled to the front.

There's no reason to believe an individual would
invent such a contraption unless he were both smart
enough and had a practical use for it. (necessity is
the mother of invention). Even being smart enough
isn't going to be enough in most cases for something
of this complexity. In all probability the inventor
would have seen something similar in use and merely
improved on it. Or maybe he saw a roller get hung
up under an object and realized that this could be
done intentionally. Perhaps the first wheels lacked
axles and were simply projections to hold a roller
from being left behind.

Whatever the case, it doesn't seem very likely that
the pyramid builders were familiar with the wheel in
my understanding. Certainly the person who drew the
siege ladder was familiar with the wheel or it would
have been drawn wrong.

Again, I don't know that they didn't have the wheel
and a seemingly knowledgeable poster on another site
claimed there were old kingdom toys with wheels so I
may well be wrong.

The wheel would be less useful to a society familiar
with boats and laid out along a river than to most ot-
ther peoples. The idea that it was against the reli-
gion to use one seems a little improbable especially
to anyone capable of building the pyramid.

There's no doubt they used wheel-like devices which
are even more complicated such as drills and saws. But
these are only vaguely wheel-like and they had need
for them. This technology could simply bypass the wheel.

But a theory which uses any simple technology to build
the pyramid shouldn't be dismissed out of hand. The
wheel is on the cusp of simple.
