The TV programme suggested that the damage was caused by post-Carter robbers - probably WWII, when, so it was alleged, the mummy was left unguarded. The supposed thieves were apparently after precious objects believed to be hidden somewhere in the chest cavity. I found it difficult to imagine something like that taking place in the modern era on such a high-profile object ...
