I doubt that this is what you are looking for but you never know it may provide a lead to something else which could possibly lead to something else... and so on...
In one of the episodes of Michael Palin's BBC travelogue/documentary about the Sahara, a group of people were shown playing a game that, IIRC, goes way back in time.
The game involved moving small stones or pebbles along a line drawn in the sand.
As I say, I doubt this is what you are looking for, but, well, there's no harm in mentioning it to you
