MacFarlane, Charles,
An amusing example of mid 19th century English Bigotry.
This was in 1850, and in the decade before this 1 million Irish had died in the famines, and anti-Irish sentiment and by extension anti-Catholicism in England was pretty rife at the time.
Apart from that, the 'Porte' is basically the Ottoman equivalent of Whitehall, the phrase:
Ce monument a eté
Erigeé par le zele du tres pieux
Monsieur Nayler Bey,
Au nom du Catholicisme, a la Memoire
Des Albanais Catholiques morts pour la Foi
translates as:
"This monument was erected by the zeal of the very pious Mr N.B. in the name of Catholicism and for the memory of the Albanian Catholics who died for the faith"
I have no idea what this is referring to - "Mohalich" is on the Black Sea but this is before the Crimean War, so I don't know what it would be - perhaps the Ottomans - against the Greek Christians and Albanians?...
Why are you researching this guy?
