On July 10, 2023, a fissure eruption started on the Reykjanes Peninsula northwest of the sites of the 2021 and 2022 eruptions in Fagradalsfjall.
The new eruption site is about 38 kilometers (24 miles) from Reykjavík and does not pose an immediate danger to residents or infrastructure. The National Police Commissioner urges people not to go near the site. Scientists are still working to assess the situation, and there is a considerable risk of gas pollution in the area.
