I don't have any doubt that string came first, then thicker string, then some engineering genius figured out that if you took two or three strings and 'bundled' them together that you could make something that was dozens of times stronger than the individual strands. I also wouldn't be surprised if early man figured out that braiding strips of leather together could also make an extremely strong 'rope'.
