I was outside with my son just a few minutes ago and we saw the most peculiar thing happening to some clouds almost directly above us. It was like they were being carved out by straight lines. We watched as one set of two disappeared and then parallel lines started streaking through the cloud elsewhere until, presto, straight blank lines appeared.

I took 8 pictures of this happening over the course of about 10 minutes. The cloud would get carved out by straight lines, reconverge and do it again. Very bizarre, never seen anything like it. I'll put up what my son and I rate as the best picture of this "thing" happening and a second that shows the straight lines coming through it. Both he and I would love to know what the explanation for it is. Apologies in advance...still haven't replaced the old digicam...

Off to the right of this set of lines had been the original two big lines that we spotted initially. As you can see, they are virtually gone within a matter of minutes. Like I've said, my son and I would love to know what caused this weird bit of cloud business.
