From 1995 to 2003, 32 major hurricanes, with sustained winds of 111 miles per hour or greater, stormed across the Atlantic. It was chance, Dr. Gray said, that only three of them struck the United States at full strength."

I don't want to start a firestorm of global warming debate, which obviously won't be settled here. I just find in fascinating how society (and the media and politicians in particular) latch onto micro-historical events in support of the theory of the day, without regard to inconvenient macro-historical data.

40 years ago we were all in fear of global cooling. Today it's global warming. And we don't even have 150 years of data, or a meaningful way to anaylize the data. See here for example:
