It would be interesting to somehow trace their evolutionary history to see if they evolved from more surface bound life or evolved on their own down there in complete isolation. The latter would give more hope in terms of finding life on other planets, while the former would merely indicate that, in our experience, life needs a more stable enviornment, one more typical of the conditions we see near the surface (ready access to oxygen, for one) to thrive.
