PRESS RELEASE:

Vattenfall wants to build wind farm for SEK 8 billion

Vattenfall wants to build the largest wind farm in northern Europe, which represents an investment of approximately SEK 8 billion. The wind farm will be built in the Swedish part of Kriegers Flak, an area in the Baltic Sea between Germany and Sweden.

Vattenfall has bought Sweden Offshore AB from the German companies WPD offshore GmbH and Wind projekt Ingenieur- und Projektentwicklung GmbH, and has also acquired Östersjöns Vindkrafts AB from Fred Olsen A/S. These two acquisitions, which together are worth around SEK 100 million, will make it possible for Vattenfall to build the largest wind farm in northern Europe. The farm will be located in the Swedish part of Kriegers Flak, a shallow area in the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Germany.

Vattenfall is planning to build 100-150 wind power plants in the area, with a total output of between 500 and 640 MW. In total, the farm will generate over 2 TWh of electricity per year.

Vattenfall hopes to be awarded the concession for the construction of the wind farm next year. Procurement cannot begin until this has been granted, but once Vattenfall has the concession it will be possible to begin construction in 2009 and complete it in 2010.

The total investment required to build the wind farm will amount to SEK 8 billion.

“Vattenfall has worked with the development of wind power technology for large-scale, offshore generation for many years. Now we have the chance to establish large-scale wind power generation on a commercial basis. This will provide a significant contribution to our other electricity generation capacity and to the development of wind power technology,” says Hans von Uthmann, Senior Executive Vice President of Vattenfall AB and Head of Vattenfall Nordic.
