In the May issue of Geology, there is a new paper discussing
how the "polystrate" trees exposed in the Joggins forests were
created. It is:

John W. F. Waldron and Michael C. Rygel, 2005,
Role of evaporite withdrawal in the preservation
of a unique coal-bearing succession: Pennsylvanian
Joggins Formation, Nova Scotia. Geology.vol. 33,
no. 5, pp. 337-340. doi: 10.1130/G21302.1
