This makes a good deal of sense to me. After all, when somebody is sad and tells us of a loss that they have suffered, we automatically feel the pain as if we had that loss ourselves. It has to be that we're stepping into another person's life for a moment. Perhaps we simply don't catch the progression of our thoughts because we don't have to. I'd agree that this isn't telepathy. If it were mind reading, we'd be picking up emotions all the time from total non-interactive strangers...
