I am currently reading Livio Mario's history of the Golden Ratio. He has a few interesting opinions that broadly agree with my own conclusions, although he is obviously a bit/a lot sketchy on Petrie's work.

RE Jon's quote, he tells of the consternation among the Pythagoreans when they found that some numbers, such as Pi, Phi, root 2,3,5,7 etc were not expressible as whole ratios.
