In a weird way, I think you just summed up the core of this question. I have always freely used the word "race", due to my complete unability to link it with negative connotations. IMO the whole hassle of the use of this word is due to people being afraid of being labelled something or other (this works both for labellers and labelled, if you see what I mean). Depasses me complately, I'm afarid.
