I would be the last one to dismiss, block, deny or ignore anything, besides particles, that is...
IMHO the main reason why string theory (and now 'M' or Matrix theory) is so controversial is because it DIRECTLY suggests 11 dimensions and that is just mind boggling to most people that cannot cope with 3D let alone 3D + time...
