I remember driving up to the crater years ago on a western trek when I was still in college (about a hundred years back) and thinking "there is nothing here," because, of course there is nothing to be seen on approach. And then we were in an observation building on the rim and .... Absolutely indescribable. The aerial shot is terrific, but being there really is looking into the abyss.
