According to one theory there was a possible supernova event 12,000 years ago:

Supposedly, the Paleo-Indian Great Lakes area took most of the blast.

One byproduct of the blast: it may now be necessary to reassess carbon14 dates for North American sites prior to the event--they may be 10,000 or more years older than previously believed.
