I've read Haack's paper before, and she's one of the few academics that seems to realize the horror of academic publishing. So why does everybody keep feeding the monster? You lose all rights to your work for the nebulous prospect of getting tenure or some other academic achievement. And then your ideas that you supplied for free are now sold to the highest bidder and you get zilch. In fact an many cases you can't even quote yourself in some instances without getting permission from the publisher, to put in another paper that you're going to give away for free to another publisher so you can be published.
