Example of human transcription of Brunel's handwriting -

The explanation of the identity of "Orton" in that entry is not wholly correct. The Orton mentioned by Brunel was the contractor Horatio Orton (1801-1855). He was the younger brother of Henry Orton (1799-1828), who wrote a pamphlet about the Thames Tunnel. More detail appears in The Strange Journey of Humphries Brewer - [smile.amazon.co.uk]
