controversial German businessman, archaeologist, indefatigable
traveller with a prodigious propensity for languages - more than
fifteen including ancient and Modern Greek - and insatiable capacity
for self-promotion. He amassed a huge fortune and retired from
business in his thirties to devote his life to discovering “Homer’s
Troy”. His extraordinary life had an important American component.
