During the time just after alaska... when he was making free long distance calls... he would locate bad lines or downed lines, then call ma bell and report them accurately. For a short period of time, ma bell actually went to newspapers (used to be able to find them) and started to build PR around it all. For about 1 week, when they discovered just how much he was costing them *singlehandedly*

Then they started replacing equipment and infrastructure in a *huge* hurry.
