While it is typically linked to over population of the time, it's also coincidental in a timeline that less belief resulted in more political unrest.
Examples seem to abound in history, but are usually attributed to other causes than just strength of belief, so the theory is probably somewhat specious but remains somewhat intriguing in the sheer number of correlations ;0
I'd rather not discuss the modern world. I'm more interested in anything prior to 1800, though my area of greatest interest is circa 3000 BCE to 1100 AD and is primarily centered on military tactics and the evolution therof ;0
