Reminds me of Frederik Pohl's "Gateway" and the rest of the Heechee Saga. On an asteroid they discovered the remains of an ancient (500,000 yearl old) civilization with working spaceships and piles of strange flexible fan shaped objects that no human could figure out a use for.
