Having twice read and enjoyed the da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, I have started reading his Angels and Demons. And yes I am well aware that both are works of fiction based on some facts.

In an early part of the story the main character, Langdon, tells or implies that Zeus was the inspiration for the Christian popular image of God as an elderly man with a long, flowing white beard, etc.

I'm curious to know if this is actually so?

I have always thought the inspiration came from people's imaginings of the Old Testament patriarchs such as Abraham and Moses as bearded old men.
