Seriously, knowing the secrets of freemasonry doesn't make me feel 'above' anyone or in any way superior. Though again I can't speak for other such orders.

In days gone by I'm sure the secrets guarded by such orders were worth guarding for the sakes of job security (as has been mentioned by someone else), and I'll be the first to admit that they seem a little archaic from the outside.

Saying that though there are few societies these days which are as involving and social, and do as much charity work as the lodge I'm a member of, and I think that might just be the thing. Not only is it interesting, it encourages you to look in to the sciences, support the community and those less well of than yourself (whether a member or not), and it envolves a good regular night out with friends. Looking at it like that. Why not be a member?
