Dr. Jones is not a professor of archaeology... he's a treasure hunter.
He'd never get the job in the first place, probably -- then or now. You can't build a respectable career by doing disrespectable things. Well, outside of politics, anyway.
If Dr. Jones also had published works, site reports to document his finds, and actually taught his classes properly, then he'd be fine. I look at some of the academics who are hired and do attain tenure (which is sometimes merely a question of time, not quality) and I wish they did have tougher standards.
Of course, it's been years since I"ve been directly involved in the system. Things may be different now.
