I have enjoyed Eco's fiction and children's works (with the exception of Baudolino which i assume was only because i was TRYING to read this while in purgatory visiting relatives so i am giving it another go), and the few nonfiction have not been disappointing. I say take a shot. (and thankyou for alerting me to his new book)

You might enjoy Mary Doria Russel's newest A Thread of Grace (Historical novel about Italy during the war)It is up for an award or two.
