Yes, it's the smiting thing. I have a paper around here, two in fact, that go into these guys as forerunners of "striding zeus". And there's a chapter in the Mespot trade routes book that discusses Mespot influences on Narmer...Orion was not a hunter originally, it was bird, so the hunter as smiter thing doesn't work. Orion was also a shepherd in Mesopotamian astronomy, which also doesn't work with the smiting hunter motif.
