It's a linking word, pften between nouns and verbs, but not exclusively so. (I'm rubbish at explaining stuff).

Anyway, ending a sentence with a preposition would be something like:

Here is the thing you were looking for. Where for is the preposition.

It should really be written as

Here is the thing for which you were looking.

It was funny when Jack said it... lol
