In your link to Wikipedia in 1986 what really happened and it is called The Night of The Flying Saucers”. It was an very important event and the Air Force didn’t hide anything from the public due to the number of witnesses, civil and official.
The night of May 19, 1986 represents a milestone in Brazilian aviation and ufology. What became known as the "official UFO night", or "the night of flying saucers", took place when luminous objects were spotted flying on several air routes. The records made by the Air Force at the time reveal that this phenomenon occurred in São Paulo, Goiás, Rio de Janeiro and Paraná. As it is not known until today what these objects were, they were classified as UFOs (unidentified flying objects).
One of the most amazing things, according to reports, was that whenever a plane approached, the lights fled. Objects reached speeds greater than that of sound, and flew in a zigzag pattern, something practically impossible at high speeds. In addition to solid documentation and the large number of testimonies, there was a record on radar. Only solid objects of a certain size are captured by these systems, which makes the whole mystery surrounding these lights more impressive. About the size of the objects, they would reach a hundred meters in diameter, according to the researcher. The information was based on radar data provided by the pilots of the FAB's F-5 fighter jets. This size is larger than that of the Boeing 747 and Airbus A380, some of the largest passenger planes in the world. Several pilots also went on to report that they had seen similar lights. The information recorded at the time described the objects as predominantly red in color and with alterations to yellow, green and orange. here are Brazil's top officials at a press conference that the lights were UFOS:
