Hmm, I think we're pondering different lines here. Formaldehyde would imply to me that a body donated to science was used. I'm thinking somebody wanted to off their significant other and tossed them in... Both would be equally gross. I wouldn't be surprised if either is what the police are thinking. The whole thing just screams of foul play.
