I don't think it will be long now. I can't think of anyone else who has the combination of facing issues straight on in such a humble and forgiving way, always looking for reconciliation but with a strength and stability on some difficult issues. He saw it as the Church's job to stand for the ideal, and represent a hope for a world where people all live to that ideal, rather the back down and deal with the turbulent practicalities of where we all actually live. Whatever you think of his views on those things - he could not have stopped overpopulation or the spread of AIDS. But he set a clear light for those of us who are Catholics, accepting evolution but rejecting divisions between peoples and faiths. Standing his ground openly and honestly though all controversy with a sincere and humble compassion for people.
I can't help feeling sad. But I'm happy for him.
