Hi Joanne,

Is it normal and usual for a horse to lie down with its feet tucked under it? I can't think of seeing a horse in this position.

Yes, it is normal. For example tired broodmares, that lay down and still want to keep an eye on their progenity take a rest exclusively this way. In a familar stable or paddock, where the horse feels secure it will, however, sleep with it's legs outstretched. And dream. smiling smiley Like a dog in front of a fireplace, heheh.

Does anyone know of any omens associated with horses that lie down?

No. Except for a tired horse. Too tired to sleep standing up.

Is a lying down horse symbolic of somthing, similar to the riderless horse meaning a fallen leader?

Never heard. But then I have never heard of a riderless horse meaning a fallen leader either.
