During the early Dynastic Period the Egyptian Kings were buried in Mastaba tombs. The
tombs were given this name after the current Egyptian word for bench, as they resembled the
benches that where located on the front portico of the farmer’s houses. However in ancient times
that was not the purpose. The main aim was to represent the primordial mound of creation,
Tatenen, ... raised from the waters. These mastaba tombs were built using mud-bricks ... and the
more impressive ones were the larger ones ...
