This chapter provides a broad-strokes overview of the forms of enslavement and coerced labor in Egypt from the Old Kingdom (c. 2600 BCE) to the end of the Ptolemaic period (30 BCE), tracking the methods of entry into and exit from enslaved status, as well as the extraction of slave labor. Although there are some constants—such as enslavement through capture in war—over the course of nearly three millennia of Egyptian history, the forms of enslavement and coerced labor manifested differently as the state underwent societal and economic change.
