This chapter presents a survey of a thousand years of
Russian interest in Egypt, from the world of the Kievan Rus’ to the Russian Federation. At its simplest
level, it can be divided into medieval, pre-Soviet,
Soviet and post-Soviet phases, mixed in with periods
of considerable turbulence.
