Giovanni Battista Lusieri, an Italian painter born in Rome in 1755, followed the 7th
Lord Elgin to Greece and remained in Athens until his death on 1 March 1821. During
his 20-year stay in the city of Athens, he organized and completed the removal of
the Parthenon Marbles and carried out extensive excavations, which were not widely
known. Recent study of the Elgin archive has revealed part of his activity.
