With a civilization so advanced and in many ways so modern,ancient Egyptians seem very much like ourselves—we feel that ifwe were somehow transported to ancient Egypt we would findkindred souls. The people we would actually encounter, however,provide the great paradox of ancient Egypt. Despite their preco-ciousness in many areas, they were not like us at all in the most fundamental ways.
