The Forgotten Scholar. Georg Zoëga (1755-1809)

International Conference, Bologna and Rome, 27th -30th of
October 2013

History is often illiberal with those who have contributed to write it.
That is what has happened to the archaeologist and numismatic
Georg Zoëga, whose scientific and cultural heritage has almost fallen
into oblivion. The origins of his family are contended between Denmark
and Italy, as he was born in Denmark but lived in Rome from 1783 to
his death in 1809. Here he knew all the travellers who arrived to Rome
during their Grand Tour such as Goethe, Herder, Dolomieu,
von Humboldt, Thorvaldsen, and took part in the most learned milieu
in Europe at the end of the 18th century, that of the Cardinal Stefano
Borgia. As an exquisite philologist Zoëga devoted himself to the study
of the hieroglyphs attaining important intuitions for their decipherment.
He also studied the Coptic language and literature, in which field he
is still considered an excellent connoisseur. But his legacy contains
much more: letters, drawings, annotations, and other documents of
which a large part is still unpublished.

The international conference on "The forgotten Scholar Georg Zoëga
(1755-1809)", is due to a Danish-Italian collaboration, and aims at
throwing new light on this forgotten and unpublished scholar by revaluing
the importance of his work and by illustrating his prominent position in the
scientific circles of the Illuminism.
