I completely agree with you, of course it is ridiculous. If the date I'm reading in different articles varies from one to another, then even the "apocalypse now" advocates can't seem to make up their minds about the timing.
People are looking for a deeper meaning in their lives. Unfortunately, they latch on to these crazy ideas for some kind of relief from what they perceive as an ever more confusing world. This is nothing new. Apocalypse stories have been circulating for thousands of years and the world is still here. People make their own reality.
