I think...
Although the Mayan people (genetically), are still around today, that culture/language was destroyed a long time ago.
Their calendar outlasted the Mayans... so it was a good design.
If the mayans were still around today, they probably would have extended their calendar a long time ago, or adopted a new one, like the Gregorian Calendar.
That's my 2 cents.
