There is a competing theory that the universe will only expand so far,
and then begin the long process of reversing with a collapse,
eventually arriving at a single point, which then starts the whole cycle over with another big bang...

I am partial to that concept, it makes the universe sound like a big heartbeat, going on forever with a single beat every gazillion years
