It's possible that the popular perception of Nan Madol has beein influenced by recent findings on Gunung Padang. (Nan Madol is in Micronesia, some 3,700 miles from Gunung Padang in Indonesia.)
The thing is that some over-enthusiastic claims have recently been made for Gunung Padang, but have had to be retracted - [
