The Chatterton link in the Smithsonian article isn't working. This is the Wiki - [
en.wikipedia.org]
The quote “a curious piece of antiquity once an altar, supposed to have been used for offering sacrifices to the sun,” comes from "Rambles in the South of Ireland" (vol 1 of 2) [
archive.org] - 1838: 201 (224). This particular link includes Chatterton's original drawing (and one of the stones is shown leaning at an angle, as also illustrated in the photograph in the Smithsonian article).
The Hitchcock reference is from "The Castles of Corkaguiny, County of Kerry. No. I", Richard Hitchcock
Proceedings and Transactions of the Kilkenny and South-East of Ireland Archaeological Society, Vol. 3, No. 2 (1855), pp. 345-35: 137 (5).
It's astonishing that the structure had deteriorated so much over only fifteen years or so.
