I agree that this jointed bedrock. Unfortunately, I have been able to find any
detailed description of this feature. There once was a great deal of controversy
about this feature, which was reported in the newspapers of New Zealand
over it. I have not been able find any of these articles online although there
should be a New Zealand news database somewhere archiving them.
At times, the discussion beacme very acrimonious.
The only accessable formal publication mentioing it that I can find is:
Clark, G. 2011 Identity and Alternative Versions of the Past in New
Zealand. Terra Australis 35: 5–15.

While looking the Kaimanawa Wall, it came to me that this type of
pseudoarcheaogical site form a continuum based upon the degree of
weathering and geomorphic etching. It would be a Class 1, consisting
of unweathered and unetched jointed bedrock and the class would
increase with weathering, later etching, and eventually complete
stripping of the regolith and corestones.
