Menhirs destroyed in Carnac: the reasons for a media and political frenzy

In less than 24 hours, the destruction of a site grouping menhirs and small monoliths in Carnac (Morbihan) received an extraordinary media and political echo. A case loaded with symbols, which ended up completely evacuating its complexity.

The political opportunity was too good. He grabbed it. On Wednesday, taking advantage of a signing session held in Pluneret, in Morbihan, Éric Zemmour made a jump to Carnac, to show himself there in a short video on the site where menhirs and monoliths were destroyed by construction works. “Here, an elected official did not hesitate to sacrifice this trace of a very distant past to destroy everything and to put a DIY store in its place. It's a bit like the era: we destroy the past and we tinker over it ".

The exercise, pithy and without nuance, also says something about the time. This affair – which raises real questions, moreover – summoned too many totems and great symbols not to become a national controversy at little cost.
A story that ticks all the boxes

History, heritage, but also the environment, soil artificialisation, consumption and materialism, history ticked all the boxes. On the left, political reactions have also been numerous. Like the ecologist deputy Sandrine Rousseau on the social network Twitter: “Destroying multimillennial menhirs for a store, what better illustration of our madness? ". Same argument for

It does not matter if the debate – which can never be completely settled, and this is the main problem – remains unresolved on the archaeological value of this site and these small menhirs and monoliths. It does not matter that the blunder - because it is one and it stains in the perspective of a classification of these megaliths as World Heritage by Unesco - is not intentional and that no protagonist of this file has obviously wanted this scenario.
Photos of the other menhirs of Carnac

To make matters worse, several media outlets and widely followed accounts on social networks have released photos and videos of the alignments of menhirs as the general public imagines them or knows them. A choice that fueled the fantasy and overreaction machine a little more. According to the Tagaday monitoring platform, 328 articles, sounds and reports have discussed the subject since June 6, the date of publication of the subject in Ouest-France.

The result: a wave of approximations, hatred, and filthy comments on social networks. Olivier Lepick, mayor (Horizons) of Carnac – whom we failed to reach – ended up ironically greeting on Facebook “all those who smeared, judged, executed, accused” and “those who attacked my wife and my children on social networks ”, when relying on a press release from the Drac which minimizes the damage. The far right has decided not to let go. Reconquest calls for a demonstration in Carnac this Friday.

Not sure what this is supposed to mean. He hints that the damage is not as great as first stated.

Regardless even if only one single menhir was damaged it is one too many and this should have never, ever happened. The construction company is also totally at fault and should lose it's license.

Truly a sad, sad day.

From Mayor: Mayor Olivier Lepick told AFP that he had "followed the law" and pointed to the "low archaeological value" of objects found during checks before the construction process began.
I guess 7000 year old standing stones have "low archaeological value"

The land was not situated in a protected area and had been earmarked for commercial use, he added.
Why in heaven's name would 7000 year old standing stones not be protected ?

France, like the rest of the world, has lost the plot. I repeat this should never have occurred.
