Sadly, despite publications such as this -

Although some schools of thought, such as Cornelius Holtorf, might argue that what we view as "vandalism" might also be viewed as a kind of response to the cultural artefact under discussion. Not too sure I'd agree with that ...
I suppose one famous example that never ceases to annoy me is the presence of the 19th and 20th century graffiti in the relieving chambers of the Great Pyramid ...

But, then, at what point does an intrusive graffito become an historical artefact in its own right?
