Otoh, I'm a bit unsure of why they consider consciousness studies as gray-borderland area. Experiments in this field are as testable as any other. Granted you could argue that interpretation of those experiments are fringe, but then again, doesn't any experiment needs to be interpreted ? Shermer himself says that "all observations must be for or against some view if they are to be of any service", the reason of this I believe is precisely because you need to interpret the data, and interpreting with no view to be for or against doesn't seem possible at all to me.
